As a photographer, if I were to say in a few words everything I am and everything I love to photograph, it would be to document the fathomless mystery of culture: the smell, taste, and most of all visual aspects of how man believes, dresses, speaks, carries out domestic ritual, and the many unique ways, lives life as inhabitants of this earth.
Recently I made an analogy of two photographs representing ancient cultures--one from the colorful vegetable market at Chichicastenango, in the El Quiché area of Guatemala and one from praying Palestinian men at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, located in the highly sensitive Israeli-Palestinian part of Jerusalem. These people are over 7,000 miles apart and their customs, language, dress and beliefs are as vastly different from each other as they are fascinating.
Here in the state of Texas, is an as nearly fascinating analogy of customs and culture—people from the East Texas Caddo Lake and those from North Texas Fort Worth Stockyards. These Texans all speak English, each in a different way—perhaps with influences--one from the French, another from Spanish. One is a boat, hunting and fishing community, the other represents the old west cattle-herding and animal husbandry. Both filled my camera viewfinder with incredible imagery I cherish.
